recommended reading

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. We've found the version by Sri Swami Satchidananda to be a helpful translation. Yoga Sutras is the first book to present the path of yoga as a comprehensive system.

The Heart of Yoga – Desikachar. Written by the son of Krishnamacharya who was the teacher of Iyengar and other well-known instructors. It is a great guide to starting a home practice, but we recommend, to practice with an experienced instructor first.

Key Muscle of Hatha Yoga – Ray Long MD. Fully illustrated anatomy book, geared specifically toward yoga asanas.

Ayurveda The Science of Self-healing – Vasant Lad, foremost teacher of ayurveda. This is a wonderful handbook and practical guide you can carry with you. A great introduction to ayurveda with self-analysis, dosha and food charts.

Light on Yoga – B.K.S. Iyengar. A very popular book, and a useful reference as a quick glance through the wealth of yoga postures and their effects on the systems of the body.

Autobiography of a Yogi – Paramahansa Yogananda. An inspiring and warm tale of Yogananda's journey to becoming a great yogi.
